You guys know I like to draw, illustrate, and paint. Well, back in 2015 I started #Drawmestylishsista. People would tag me on instagram in their favorite outfit and I’d draw my favorites. It was a creative outlet. It was fun. But, it was starting to feel disposable. #Drawmestylishsista didn’t have the substance I wanted it to. It wasn’t saying much about what I stood for except that I liked cool clothes and that I could draw.
One question sat in the back of my mind: how can I combine the art I love creating with making a real and positive impact?
So… I’m excited, nervous, and ready to introduce you to #SeeHer. A portrait study showcasing women of color. As a segment of my blog, #SeeHer will allow you guys to submit a woman of color in your life that you admire by filling out the form below. By supplying me with her name, social handles, a quote about her, and a photo I will create a FREE portrait of her. Each Wednesday for #wcw I plan on posting a portrait.
For starters, there’s a lack of appreciation for women of color in our society. It’s evident. There’s a standard of beauty that society has created that we as women of color will never fit into.
You guys may not know all of my struggles just yet, but being a woman of color is one of them. There was a time when I didn’t appreciate the dark hues of my skin tone or the thickness that came natural to my body. How can I use my journey to self-love as an inspiration?
I love to blog and bring joy from sharing my experiences. But ultimately, the mission of Stylish Sista is to empower young women. If you could leave my blog feeling like you could wear something you never thought you could or do something you never thought possible – I’ve done my job.
There are far too many times where women of color aren’t appreciated for their creativity, strength, drive, or beauty. It’s time I use my art and platform to showcase the moms, sisters, daughters, and friends. It’s time that these women are SEEN and APPRECIATED. It’s time that we #SeeHer.
There isn’t a limit of how many women you can submit. So submit away! I am extremely excited to get back drawing and even more excited about getting to know and sharing the stories of some amazing women.
Let me know if you have any questions via comments or DMs!
* Although, I will try to do each submission. I can’t promise that they will all get done. You will receive an email from me if I have chosen your friend to draw! Thanks for understanding!
AND special thanks to Marianne and Wyeisha for helping me figure out how and what I wanted to do exactly.
